A RISE place-based course is a one-hour, asynchronous online course co-created by RISE Travel Institute and a value-aligned community representative, company, or organization from a particular tourism destination. The content will include a deep dive into the history of the place, its indigenous culture, the social, political, economic, and/or environmental issues it faces, and stories of resilience amidst challenges. At the end of the course, travelers will be provided with some examples of how to travel mindfully and maximize their positive impact on the destination. The course will also showcase some sustainable development initiatives, conservation efforts, and community empowerment projects that travelers can support.

The objective of these courses is multifold: 

• Provide travelers with the knowledge and tools to have a more transformative and enriching experience

• Generate a sustainable revenue stream for destination partners and the communities they support through student enrollment all year round

• Increase the visibility of grassroots sustainable development projects 

• Amplify the voices of local and Indigenous communities around the world by providing a platform to share their stories
